LIH seeks applications from highly motivated leaders with expertise in early drug discovery to head up an outstanding inter-institutional Disease Modelling & Screening Platform (DMSP) team between the LIH and the University of Luxembourg, responsible for phenotypic HCS/HTS screening using patient-derived cellular models.

The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team, covering the areas of molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology and computational image analyses, with activities where high content discovery interfaces with technology and its development. The selected candidate will oversee all collaborative drug discovery research projects and guide international and multidisciplinary teams of innovative scientists to achieve the institutes’ aims in translational biomedicine. Therefore, the successful applicant will have to actively and productively interface and collaborate with academic and industrial partners within Luxembourg and on an international level.

Key Accountabilities
  • Technical/scientific management of collaborators in establishing visual assays for high content screening;

  • Oversee high content screening activities which includes:
    • all steps pertaining to high content screening i.e. scaling of established assays and adaptation to the screening platform, incl. 3D cell culture;
    • the actual screening process, i.e. the day to day data management;
    • interpretation of screening results, as well as adaption and integration of advanced technologies allowing for imaging of more complex cell mixtures;
    • Set up and validation of patient based diseases models
    • Screening across a scope of modalities, from small molecules to biologics
    • Target-free screening and lead optimization

  • Identify, explore and implement new approaches, models and methodologies to improve technology base;

  • Lead and manage an inter-institutional, multidisciplinary team of research scientists as well technical staff; direct and co-ordinate their work, schedule and assign work to meet completion dates, oversee job duties; manage cross-functional team of scientist;

  • Provide expert scientific contributions to projects and project proposal

  • Operational management of the platform, incl. oversight of cost calculation, pricing, invoicing

  • Creation and implementation of a strategic and operational R&D/business plan

  • Collect, analyze and summarize data for presentations, reports, publications and patents;

  • Secure additional, outside funding through academic grants or SME/industrial partners;

  • Regular reporting to the Executive Committee of the platform, incl. guidance regarding the strategic development of the platform

  • Ph. D. or equivalent in appropriate discipline with relevant experience,  ideally in the areas of cancer and/or neurodegeneration
  • Extensive experience in drug discovery; miniaturization and automation engineering, imaging and confocal microscopy
  • Recognized as an expert in translational research implementing assay development and HC/HT screening;
  • Strong experience in leadership both at the scientific level and as a leader of people and teams;
  • Experience in the operational management and strategic development of a technology platform, or similar
  • Passion for mentorship, building the careers and experience of others while driving a strong and cohesive team environment;
  • Outstanding communication skills and enthusiasm for working in inter-institutional and multidisciplinary teams.
