Following a 3.5-day audit, the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) has been offered ISO 20387 accreditation for a selection of its biobanking activities by the UK accreditation body (UKAS).
This recognition, which is subject to clearance of the observed audit findings, covers key processes provided through CPMO, CIEC, and IBBL, with QMO overseeing the overall Quality Management System and DMI, GM, and ADM contributing to management and support processes. The formal accreditation is expected in Q2/2026.
The accreditation scope includes the collection, processing, testing, and storage of a range of biological materials such as whole blood, plasma, buffy coat, DNA, RNA, and PBMCs, using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
Auditors particularly praised LIH’s robust and mature quality management system, noting that biobanking is performed to exceptionally high scientific and quality standards by engaged, competent staff across all units.
This success is a clear proof of the LIH’s commitment to excellence in biobanking. It would not have been possible without an incredible team effort across the whole institute, built on a clear strategic vision. This achievement is valued recognition of the work of the entire staff and is something to be proud of
says Dr Sabine Lehmann, Head of Quality Management.
The technical scope of the ISO 20387 accreditation is now as follows:
| Biological material | Collection & Reception | Processing | Testing | Storage |
| Whole Blood Plasma Buffy Coat DNA Total RNA PBMCs | Blood Collection (WI CO-003) Incoming Shipments and Sample Receipt (WI REP-005) | Blood Processing (WI REF-006) Automated DNA Extraction with Chemagen platforms (WI REF-002) RNA Extraction from Non-fixed Materials (WI REF-016) Isolation and Cryopreservation of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) (WI REF-008) | Cell counting with Cellometer K2 (AP M119) | Long-term storage at ‑80°C Long-term storage at ‑196°C |
