Cancer Data Integration: A Technical White Paper from Dataspace4Health Oncology Use-Case

26 June 2025 2minutes

The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), in collaboration with leading national healthcare and research stakeholders, is proud to announce the publication of a new technical white paper on data modeling for colorectal and lung cancers. Developed as part of the Dataspace4Health initiative, the white paper presents a robust framework for structuring and integrating oncology-related health data—marking a key step forward in Luxembourg’s efforts to enable secure, interoperable, and research-ready health data infrastructure.

The Dataspace4Health project explores how to use Gaia-X as a European framework for data spaces that ensures data protection, security and interoperability. It aims to demonstrate the benefits of data-driven innovation and AI for healthcare and research, such as improving diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life, and advancing scientific knowledge and discovery.

The white paper specifically addresses the oncology use-case, which focuses on implementing a precision oncology program supported by a federated data architecture. This architecture will enable secure data exchange between healthcare providers and research institutions, fostering collaboration and accelerating scientific discovery in cancer care.

The white paper introduces a standardized data model tailored to the Luxembourg healthcare context, drawing upon the oncology data framework developed by Germany’s Medical Informatics Initiative (MII)—a €500 million initiative backed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. By adopting and adapting the validated MII model, the project leverages internationally recognized standards to ensure quality, interoperability, and scalability.
