Running to support cancer research

“Every kilometer stands for perseverance, community, and hope”

10 June 2026 2minutes

On May 25th Mike Almeida started a big adventure: he set out to run all the way around Luxembourg – roughly 360 kilometers in six days! With this challenge, he wants to raise donations for cancer research at the Luxembourg Institute of Health.

Mike, how did you come up with the idea of a marathon to collect funds for cancer research at LIH?

Last year, I decided to take better care of my health, and this is why I took up running. I wanted a new challenge, and I also wanted to help advance cancer research.

Are you a regular runner? Where is this marathon taking place?

No, I’m not a professional runner; I run for fun and to stay healthy. I’ve set off from Schengen on Monday morning the 25th of May with the intention of arriving back in Schengen on the 30th of May at 2p.m.

Are you interested in a particular domain of cancer research?

No, I simply want everyone to have the best possible chance at life. I know many people who must fight against cancer: I want to support this through my fundraising campaign.

What message would like to leave to people who wish to start a similar initiative?

You can push beyond your limits; you just have to believe in yourself and really want it. Be physically and mentally prepared, well-equipped, and well-accompanied during the whole week, for any type of supply. Anticipate your routes before the start, and remember: every meter counts.

Thank you Mike for your generous initiative!
