06 July 2026 4minutes

Summer time is here, and so are our next updates! Before you take a well-deserved break, we have the following news to share.

Publications

Dr Sophie Pilleron has had a new paper accepted in the journal Cancer Epidemiology entitled: Cancer incidence and mortality among older adults in Asia: Estimates for 2022 and projections to 2050. You can read this influential piece here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877782126001529?via%3Dihub.

Conferences

Marie Haubrich, an intern in our team, presented her master’s thesis work at the MOSA conference on Women’s Health at Maastricht University. Her poster covered an interrupted time series analysis of breast cancer incidence, investigating how trends evolved among screening-eligible and older women in Europe.

Dr Pauline Duquenne has had abstracts accepted for two upcoming international conferences. The first, an ePoster on Display, will be presented at the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) Congress in Madrid this November. The second, a poster presentation, has been accepted for the Conference of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) 2026, which will take place in Valencia in November.

These presentations will showcase collaborative research involving several members of our team, alongside key collaborators including Dr George Ramsay (Aberdeen Centre for Evaluation) and Dr Isaaco Montroni (Fondazione IRCCS Istituto dei Tumori, Milan).

Speaking of SIOG… We are officially the hosts for SIOG 2027! Dr Sophie Pilleron has been appointed National Convenor for the 2027 instalment of the conference, and is working with the SIOG board and the Luxembourg Convention Bureau to put on an exciting event. We look forward to the huge milestone for geriatric oncology in Luxembourg!

Teaching and Knowledge Transfer

On the 25th of June,  Dr India Pinker delivered a guest lecture for King’s College London. She featured alongside leaders in fields of qualitative health research, delivering a session on methodology for the Advanced Qualitative Methods Public Short Course: Approaches to Cross-Disciplinary Qualitative Health Research.

On the 25th of June, Dr Pauline Duquenne delivered a compelling webinar on Prediction modelling in Geriatric Oncology: State of the art, methods & perspectives, hosted by the SIOG methods Working Group. The webinar generated interesting discussion and is available to watch on demand via the SIOG Webinar page: https://siog.org/programmes/education/siog-webinars/

Ongoing Project Developments

On 15 and 17 June, Dr Clémence Bafei participated in workshops aimed at identifying effective strategies to strengthen the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Benin and Togo. The workshops form part of the EU-funded EMPOWER project and are helping to ensure that interventions are tailored to the specific needs and contexts of each setting.

Key outcomes included the validation of findings from the contextual analysis conducted by the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute members of the consortium, as well as discussions on the design of digital health tools and the role of community health workers in supporting NCD prevention and care.

Team Updates

On the 9th of June, the team took time for brainstorming and team-building activities in the great outdoors. Making the most of Luxembourgish nature in the sun, hiked a trail in the Müllerthal region while discussing ongoing projects and exploring new ideas.

At the end of June, we also said goodbye to Nesrine Neissen Masmoudi as she completed her two-month internship. Working alongside Dr Pauline Duquenne, Dr Clémence Bafei, and Dr Sophie Pilleron, Nesrine contributed to the analysis of an international survey of healthcare professionals involved in colorectal cancer care. We look forward to sharing the results of this work in the near future.

Until next time, keep well!
