In Memoriam — Dominic Allen

06 August 2026 2minutes

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our former colleague and friend Dominic Allen passed away on 1 August 2026, at the age of 74.

Dominic was one of the founding figures of the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL). As Chief Operating Officer, he was there from the very earliest days — when the IBBL was little more than a small team and an idea housed in a temporary, pre-fabricated building — and he devoted himself, over many years, to helping it grow into the established and respected national institution it is today.

Those who worked alongside him will remember the entrepreneurial spirit he brought to the organisation, and the care he took to build not just a biobank, but a team. Nowhere was that clearer than in his work on coordinating the IBBL’s move to Dudelange building. Drawing on his early career as a design engineer on hospital construction projects, Dominic acted as the bridge between our scientific teams and the architects, patiently translating the practical needs of each department into the building itself — down to details such as a dedicated lift for samples and humidity control for the biobank. Characteristically, he also made sure the design kept people connected, placing shared spaces where colleagues would naturally meet, so that no one would feel isolated.

Beyond the IBBL, Dominic’s career spanned the life sciences and, earlier, the financial sector. But those of us at the LIH and the IBBL will remember him above all for his dedication, his practical wisdom, and his warmth.

Our thoughts are with his family and all who were close to him at this difficult time.
