The impact of alcohol on the global burden of cancer: evidence and estimates from epidemiological studies

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have consistently linked alcohol consumption to at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, and colorectal cancer. Recent estimates attribute around 740,000 cases of cancer annually to drinking alcohol, responsible for around 4% of cancer cases. Even low to moderate alcohol consumption carries measurable cancer risks: the more alcohol consumed, the greater the risk of cancer. In this lecture, Dr Harriet Rumgay will examine the relationship between alcohol intake and cancer risk and the global distribution of cancers attributable to alcohol. We will also highlight effective alcohol control strategies and emerging evidence for global cancer prevention efforts.
