Research Strategy Specialist - Research Programmes in Infection and Immunity - MO1120

The Research Strategy Specialist will report to, and work in close partnership with the Director of the Department of Infection and Immunity, supporting and complementing the work of the LIH to deliver excellence in fundamental and biomedical research programmes in Luxembourg. Research at the Department of Infection and Immunity aims to understand the complex immune mechanisms of infections and inflammatory disease processes and cancer, enabling new ways to diagnose and prevent or cure human diseases caused by these disorders.

Key Accountabilities
  • Programme development: Together with the Director, anticipate, identify, respond to, and shape external funding/collaborative opportunities. Focus on interdisciplinary and translational research; leverage local, national and international contacts to projects and initiatives with major strategic impact. Propose and lead new translational initiatives and research programmes and contribute to their development across the LIH, University of Luxembourg, hospitals and other relevant stakeholder institutions across and beyond Luxembourg.
  • Stakeholder management: Build and maintain effective relationships with relevant public health bodies, industry, research institutes and funding agency partners, in co-operation with the LIH.
  • High-level organisation of key visitors to the department. Deputise for Director as appropriate at internal and external events and meetings.
  • Project co-ordination: Provide strategic support to project managers in the department, keeping overview of ongoing activities, holding to account and providing direction.
  • Recruitment: support the Director with recruitment planning of clinician scientists, scientific researchers and project team leaders for the department; co-ordination of actual recruitment of new team members.
  • Technology transfer: Oversight of portfolio of legal dossiers for the department, in particular key documents to promote collaborative research efforts nationally and internationally.
  • Financial management: Work closely with the Director to build income and ensure financial sustainability and oversight of departmental budget together with financial controllers at the LIH.

  • Master or PhD or MD degree in a relevant discipline (biomedical science or healthcare).
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering business critical projects and/or formal project management qualification.
  • Proven ability to create a strategic vision; organisational strategy development, operational and “customer”-focused strategy.
  • Previous experience of operational management including; strategy, budget, infrastructure, people and process is desirable. Recognised as a person who is able to drive a dynamic, complex process through to the desired endpoint, ideally paired with proven writing skills.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills supported by good IT skills. Extremely good interpersonal, motivational, networking and negotiation/influencing skills. Project management and organisational skills, good decision-making skills.
  • Sound understanding of biomedical sector environment (local, national, international).
  • Ability to establish and maintain a network of personal working relationships with senior decision makers within and across academic research institutions, across regional and national agencies and with national and international funding agencies.
  • Languages skills: Fluent English and good command of German and/or French. Luxembourgish or other EU language is an asset.
