NoStra-PE comparison of different biological matrices for assessing exposure to short-lived endocrine disruptors.

Biological fluids (blood and urine), which are considered the matrices of choice for the assessment of human exposure to pollutants, are of limited use for short-life endocrine disruptors (e.g. bisphenol A, phthalates…). The main limit is related to the strong short-term variability of the concentration of these molecules in these matrices. On the contrary, hair analysis provides information that integrates exposure over longer period and therefore represents a particularly interesting alternative.

The objective of the NoStra-PE project is to determine the variability of the urinary concentration of short-life endocrine disruptors and to compare the information obtained from two matrices (urine and hair) for the biomonitoring of human exposure to these pollutants within a follow-up on human volunteers and animal experimentation.

Training and research environment

The HBRU has strong expertise in analytical toxicology and development of biomarkers for the assessment of exposure to organic pollutants and for therapeutic drug monitoring.

As part of this Master  internship, the candidate will be trained in various state-of-the-art analytical techniques such as liquid and gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometric detection (LC-MS / MS and GC-MS / MS) as well as pre-analytical work (extraction from biological matrices, purification and concentration of extracts) with the support of highly skilled engineers. The candidate may also participate in the analysis and processing of the data produced: results formatting and interpretation, and statistical analysis under the supervision of a statistician specialized in the field of biomonitoring.

The trainee will be supervised by Dr. B. Appenzeller, Head of the Human Biomonitoring Research Unit, in association with experts.

  • Master level in Analytical Chemistry or Engineering.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, autonomy.
  • Ability to work with different profiles and people with different experiences and cultural backgrounds.
  • Language skills: Fluency in French and English, with written skills in both languages. Any other language in use in Luxembourg would also be an asset.

What we offer and conditions
  • Students will have the opportunity to work in an interactive and international scientific environment, attend conferences by eminent scientists from abroad, and present their own work during lab meetings.Control will receive training in high level analytical technique (LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS) and analytical softwares, data interpretation and statistical analysis.
  • They will receive training in high level analytical technique (LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS) and analytical softwares, data interpretation and statistical analysis.
