MAin Responsibilities of position
  • Develop and lead Translational Research programmes and define its project portfolio in discussion with the Project Team Leaders, the translational scientific steering committee (tSSC).
  • Foster collaborations across the LIH departments, the University of Luxembourg and other stakeholders at the national and international level in view of implementing transversal translational research projects
  • Coordinate and guarantee scientific excellence of the research projects performed by providing scientific advice and guidance to the principal investigators.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the programme and adapt and develop innovative technological means and other resources to the needs of the programmes. 

KEY Accountabilities
  • Develop her/his own translational research within the prioritized research areas of the LIH.
  • Lead the portfolio of translational projects in order to implement a competitive translational research programme at the international level.
  • Participate actively in recruitment process of Clinician Scientists and Project Team Leaders
  • Manage and develop internal and external communication in cooperation with LIH
  • Manage the programme’s finances and contribute actively to fundraising and grant applications for the programmes and LIH.
  • Establish national and international scientific collaboration networks favouring the exchange of competences and the visits of researchers and students.
  • Represent the activities of the translational programmes at a national and international level.
  • Promote value creation from research patents, licencing of patents, contracts with industry, etc.
  • Participate in scientific evaluations of research projects, research groups, scientific advisory committees, etc.
  • Be a member of the executive management committee of the LIH and the translational Scientific Steering Committee.
  • Participate in reporting activities by LIH.
  • Teaching activities at a University are encouraged.

KEY SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • MD/PhD (clinician scientist) or equivalent qualification with an excellent track record in scientific publications in the field of fundamental scientific or translational biomedical research (a medical background with a specialisation would be considered an advantage).
  • At least 10 years of experience in translational biomedical and clinical research.
  • At least 10 years of active clinical practice in a relevant specialisation area with current participation in advanced clinical care.
  • Experience in the design, acquisition and execution of clinical trials related to pharmacological therapies and/or medical products.
  • Successful acquisition of competitive funding on the national and international level and experience in leading national and European multi-stakeholder research projects.
  • Appropriate qualifications or equivalent experience allowing for the supervision of PhD students in the area of life sciences and medicine.
  • Leadership in international networks & consortia in their field of research.
  • High international scientific & clinical visibility documented by high-impact publications, organisation of and active participation in international conferences, etc.
  • Strong leadership skills in representing translational research development to executive level & (inter)-national decision makers
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Extensive management & leadership skills as demonstrated by the successful management, for several years, of a large diverse scientific and clinical research team
  • Language skills: perfect command of English & German or French, other European languages would be an advantage
